Bulk shipping in the Rostov region involves the transportation of loose, liquid, and Ro-Ro cargo through the ports of Azov, Yeysk, Taganrog, and via river logistics along the Don. This model combines sea-going bulk carriers and river barges: large shipments move across the Sea of Azov and further along the Volga-Don waterway, enabling cost-efficient routing from deep within Russia to international sea destinations.
BSF organizes these shipments on a turnkey basis, controlling every stage and utilizing the seasonal river fleet of the Don. As a result, the cost of river feeder transport can be significantly lower than road haulage, saving up to tens of percent per ton-kilometer.
Cargo categories for bulk carriers from Rostov, Yeysk, and Azov
Bulk carriers and barges from Rostov, Yeysk, and Azov primarily handle large shipments of bulk cargo. Key cargoes include grain crops (wheat, barley, sunflower seeds), which is logical given that the Rostov region is one of Russia's leading regions for agricultural exports.
In addition to grain, coal and coke from Donbas mines are actively shipped, along with construction materials such as sand, gravel, and cement. Chemical products, mineral fertilizers, and biofuels are also in high demand on these routes. When organizing transportation, special attention is paid to segregated loading and isolation to avoid mixing and contamination of cargo lots.
For lumber, scrap metal, and large equipment, river barges are more commonly used: they deliver the cargo to ports on the Sea of Azov, where it is then transshipped onto sea-going bulk carriers for further export.
